This historic church, built in 1862, was visited by Oscar Wilde in 1882 on his American tour. His cousin was rector there at the time.  Less than 20 years later, when the punitive laws against homosexuality had imprisoned and then shortened the life of Wilde, the two lovers in BOY IN THE RAIN must still conceal themselves against the same laws. This event will be held in the historic Jefferson Market Public Library in Greenwich Village 425 Avenue of the Americas at 10th Street. You can see the tower a way off, built in 1887 in Victorian Gothic style. The program will also feature historical novelist Mary Calvi and her novel If a Poem Could Live and Breathe: A Novel of Teddy Roosevelt's First Love. Our host is Christina Britton Conroy, herself an Edwardian novelist. This program will be recorded and will be available some time after the presentation.  Books available for purchase.
